(2 disc standard version, street date 10/23/07):
The film has an overall softer look, more film-like than previous versions. The colors, especially the pastels in the opening ape sequence, are far more vivid. But, alas, the rear projections now LOOK like rear projections, something I don't recall in theatrical showings. Overall, this version is the best so far. It features anamorphic video and 5.1 sound.
The commentary by astronaut stars Keir Dullea and Gary lockwood is sadly lacking in focus and insight, particularly during the sequences not featuring themselves. The six featurettes on disc 2 are well done and informative and I learned some things from them I didn't know. The packaging is also very handsome, a major improvement over the previous video incarnations. If you are a fan this is the definitive version to own (again, I'm writing about the standard DVD version, not the hi def ones).
