The two main actors perfectly are cast. At this point, in 1942, Hitler's ego hadn't begun fully to disintegrate.
The film centers on one day and night in which Adi (as Eva affectionately called him) is visited by him at his mountain fortress, perched on a high peak overlooking a formidable canyon.
The realism of this film, for all Sokurov's individuality of direction, is the greatest I've seen on this topic.
A most chilling view of a megalomaniac, all the more terrifying because of its lack of histrionics.
Surprisingly, the film manages to inject occasional humor as Goebbels and Hitler struggle with their women.
Make no mistake, however, this is a serious film and one that makes you feel you're a fly on the wall.
