Guillermo Del Toro has also hinted in interviews he'd be interested, a much better choice IMO.

No surprise Jackson will keep tight control. He should.

New Line didn't have much choice - they've had two hits this year, and their big fantasy launch, The Golden Compass, fizzlewd at the box office - no surprise and their own fault, why they thought Chris Weitz was the man to write and direct it I have no idea. (I've never forgiven them for throwing out the Tom Stoppard script.)

NL desperately needs a hit, so they settled the suit with Jackson ASAP, before the Hobbit rights revert in 2010.
