Matt Dillon plays the drunken, job-hopping, gambling, writer wannabe, Chernowski. He drifts aimlessly managing to have life "his way" since he really doesn't expect much from life in the first place.
Dillion is supported by Lilli Taylor who plays a low-life, barfly of absolutely no virture. Chernowski finds it convenient to live with her while he fuddles through an 8 to 5 job while playing the horses with Fisher Stevens. His racetrack success soon bothers Taylor and he moves on to Marisa Thomei whom he meets in a bar by buying her his last drink. Thomei invites him home then later introduces him to a strange, moneyed character who takes care of loose women by providing them shelter and food.
Eventually, Chernowski ends up back with Taylor for another round of low-life living.
Dillon's performance doesn't look like much on the surface at first but his character is so deeply ingrained as a strong, mostly silent man who's mission in life is to go his own way. Taylor gives a fine performance and even Fisher Stevens is believable as a flash in the pan gambling buddy.
Factotum is mostly vignettes of Chernowski's life that seem mundane but are bursting with irony and humor. I found myself laughing out loud on occasion.
