I was in the midst of a severe Beart infatuation when I saw Un Coeur En Hiver. I saw it right after watching the Jean de Florette/Manon of the Spring, but it was Auteuil who impressed me. Hardly seemed the same person who played that odious wretch in Jean/Manon.As for recommendations, here are a few fairly recent foreign films that I've enjoyed over the past several years:
Leolo(an odd but absorbing and occasionally gross film)
Zentropa(set in post-WWII Germany)
Before the Rain
The City of Lost Children(visually amazing)
The Monster(Roberto Benigni comedy)
Europa Europa
Wings of Desire(just about anything directed by Wim Wenders is worth seeing)
Burnt by the Sunand one old "must see" is M(early Peter Lorre film that is just superb).
I'm sure I'll recall more, and I'll toss a recommendation in from time to time. I keep telling myself that I should put together a list of my favorites from all genres, and I'll probably do that sooner or later.
Enjoy! :-)
