And "headlines"? The guy's been dead for ten years. Surely that's enough time for a little historical perspective. And that perspective shows that he ran his political career on a racist, states-rights platform that worked well enough in backwoods Georgia in the 60's, but he was either too ignorant or politically blind to see that it wouldn't play on a national stage. Only when he was physically brought to a condition where he had to constantly feel smaller than those around his was he able to admit that perhaps that line of reasoning wasn't, perhaps, the best way to go.
I suppose south of the Mason/Dixon line there are people still holding up GW as an icon of intellectual thought. I imagine, within certain circles, Jeffrey Dahmer is looked upon as a top-flight gourmet. But for the rest of us, George Wallace was a dumb-ass cracker bigot, who we'd no more use as an example of advanced intellect than we would a tree stump.
'The smartest man in the room'. L-O-friggin-L. GW in a room full of dogs wouldn't hold that title.
