Owens moves into the firstrank of male leads with this role: brilliantly underplayed yet strong and forceful when needed.
I don't know about those that complain about the action dominating: it didn't. It was, after all, about an escape and most of the film... well, the characters were engaged in it. That one stunt with the motorcycle should become a classic.
In fact, all the action sequences were extremely well done, believable, and not overlong which is the bane of films like Blood Diamond and the lastest Bond thing.
A very good action film with intelligence, pacing, and very good performances: what more do yo want?
Only Julianne Moore was lacking. Her voice, appearance, and carriage seemed very weak, almost as if she were ill or recuperating.
The scene where central character is being carried through and out the bombed out building is as emotional and hard-hitting as any I can remember without being oversentimentalized or melodramatic.
Cuaron has made the best of the "message" films of the recent past. "Constant Gardener," "Traffick," "Syriana," all are very good films but C of G is superior.
Note: I felt it necessary to go to extras and have deaf texting as I found the Brit accents, especially Michael Caine's, almost unintelligible.
