First off... Marie (Anne Wiazemsky!!!!!!) Man oh man, what a beauty. It was painful to watch her fall for the guy that abused her and then give herself to the old man (although I'm sure that part gives Victor and Patrick hope!).And her father... what a dope... he goes way beyond principles into immensly self (and family) destructive stubborness.
There's a lot of cruelty in this movie and, really, not much heart (except for the guy who's in love with Marie and the donkey itself). Still it's a marvelous film and a keen look at how flawed people are. There's an abruptness to much of it... time passing suddenly, scenes just being over without it feeling quite right.
I have to admit I was really hoping the hooligans would get there comeupance (like a stray bullet or something).
I like the religious themes... especially like that Bresson, being a Catholic, was heretical enough to show a donkey being baptized and saintly and saved... but then his life wasn't really so much harder than most of the people in the film. He was just more innocent.
Don't piss on my shoe and tell me it's raining.
