Did anyone see "The Cranes Are Flying" on TCM Wednesday evening?
Wow, is all I can say! What a masterpiece. A compelling, tragic narrative on love and war in the USSR at the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War. This gem had superb performances, wonderful b&w photograpy, and sure handed direction. The lead actress was a harbinger of Anna Karina. It's available as a Criterion dvd which I will pick-up immediately.
