I just wonder if it looks dated to a modern Western viewer - based on your reaction, apparently not.The lead guy is a wonderful actor who left great heritage. You would be well advised to seek his "The Lady with the Dog" based on famous Chechov's novel.
If you liked the Cranes, you MUST also look at "Ballad of a Soldier" could be called its sister film.
