Lizabeth Scott, so inept as the femme fatale, shows in comparison how good many of the B actresses of these films were.
The story is a convoluted mess, but that's okay in this genre. The bad guy is plenty bad, too, but since she's in so many scenes, and the focal point of much of the plot, the film falls on her performance.
Bogart didn't seem to believe much in this one, either, resorting to the mannerisms which a fan can spot in his poorer vehicles.
Nothing to see here, move along...
