RE: Forget "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" and watch Niven and Brando in

I agree with you. Brando had everything, and was very funny in the role. As far as I'm concerned, casting Steve Martin in the Brando role was a bad idea. Martin, at that stage of his career, was a comedian acting (therefore, not believable), and the part required some depth that he couldn't muster. Michael Caine gave a valiant effort, but couldn't quite duplicate the elegance of a David Niven, but there aren't many who could.
