I just picked up the recent extended version of "That Thing You Do". I've been a diehard fan of TTYD since it hit the theatres in 1996. I played in a band in the 1970's and the gigs and venues brought back memories, mostly good ones.
I picked up the original DVD around 1999 and was waiting for an extended version since then. I'm glad it's here. It is well worth it. The extra footage really aids in telling the story. Without spoiling anything, here is a brief synopsis of the extra footage:
We get to see much more of Tina, Guy's gf at the beginning. We also see her relation with Guy go bad as her new dentist steals her away. A few scenes show Tina and dentist getting romantic.
We see more of "Boss Vic Koss" in Pittsburgh and his secretary who can't stand him.
When the bass player meets the Chantrelline singer he has a crush on (middle girl played by Julie Harkness), we knew they had something going in the original version. Guy runs to TBP's hotel room to show him Billboard magazine with TTYD listed as a hit. TBP arrives at the door half dressed. It was obvious he was not alone in his room. In the extended version, the camera shot confirms it.
More dialog in many scenes. We see Sol Sylers disgusting eating habits. Yecchhh!
When The Wonders appeared on TV, Faye (Liv Tyler) got her hair done and put on a fancy new dress. Now we get to see her step out of the limo. We get a great "leg shot" as she steps out. Nice gams!
Mr. White (Hanks) after seeing Guy gets in safely after a night of drinking at a jazz club, goes out to a late night party with a friend "Lloyd" (Howie Long), He tells Guy, "we can't take you where we're going." Good grief. Does that mean what I think?
Overall, I loved it. TTYD creates a pretty little world that I wish was real and that I lived in it. One of my top 10 fave movies of all time it is.
Get it!
Claude
