one of my criteria for a really good film is it's durability.
I've seen some really great films -- that I really don't care to watch again, unless a few years have gone by. YOu know -- like Laurance of Arabia (although I can't imagine that it will ever be shown in 70mm wide screen in a 3000+ seat theater again -- ever -- which is the only wat to watch a film that magnificent).
even a so-so film can make it onto my "classic" list
if it is so well built that you can stand to watch it over and over -- like, even a few days after you've just seen it.
Casablanca is like that -- not really a good film, but so very durable
the wife loves "My Cousin Vinny" . you have to admit -- there are many great scenes in that film: Fred Gwynne is priceless!
HBO has been running "A Good Year" for the past few months, and I find I can't stop watching it.
It's a classic. Nothing special, just very well built, and a superb cast.
