"The Butcher." A classic from Claude Chabrol, perfect in

all aspects, editing, music, cinematography, acting, casting--- well, you get the idea.
Stephane Audran, as beautiful as ever, is a school mistress that, long ago, has given up on love, moving to the countryside to preside over a small town school. At a wedding, she becomes more friendly with the town's butcher and their friendship ripens and is on the threshold of becoming, perhaps, quite a bit more as a series of brutal murders strike the area with one of the victims being the young lady whose wedding they attended.
No carnage, no overbearing music ratcheting up to culminate in a clash of cymbals, no frothing, menacing monster slathering over his victim.... none of that. Chabrol, rather, works slowly, looking sideways at the horror which envelops and seeps into every facet of everyday life.
This film leaves you uneasy, with the source of this unpleasantness hard to pinpoint: if this film doesn't lead you to some interesting conversations with your viewing partner(s), you need some new friends!
