Was one of my favorite novels of the '90s. There is little doubt of Saramago's gift, though I personally despise the slimy little bugger. He just has an incredible talent in building narratives, incorporating powerful symbolism and using prose that has the feel of improvisation. Blindness is probably his masterpiece. I didn't realize it was being made into a movie. I can't see how it would do justice to the novel.
