Crummy film used to rate a career? Paul embodied a

characteristic which pretty much all America men wished: coolness.
But, he also could be quite a bit more as can be seen in "Hombre," or in the two Tennessee Williams' films, "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," and, "The Long Hot Summer."
I'd say Steve McQueen was more what you're describing, never being able to portray much else but a cool taciturn hipness.
