The Showtime show Dexter makes a good case for television over the movies.
Season 1 consists of thirteen 50 minute episodes all about one central idea or story line.
What is it? - A mix of Silence of the Lambs meets CSI. Dexter is a blood splatter analyst working for the Miami police Department along with his sister Deb. Dexter however is a Serial Killer who has been raised by his Cop Foster father who trained Dexter to channel his desire for blood by killing killers who fell through the cracks.
The advantage - nearly 13 hours to tell one story - character development of all the major players - films have 2 hours and provide mostly characitures. Suspense can be created more deftly.
Silence of the Lambs and it's Best Picture status seems like a cartoon compared to the vastly better Dexter which can negotiate far more of a study into the mind of a serial killer.
Because this is not on regular TV the subject matter can be handled in a more adult way - retaining violence, nudity, sex, etc.
Highly recommend you get your hands on season 1 - and season 2 is better still.
