Big disappointment for me. I like dramatic westerns and generally like Ed Harris and was looking forward to it. But it was the poorest attempt at a western I've seen in years. Harris' writing, his acting and especially his directing doomed it. Westerns take a certain touch; Harris doesn't have it. Casting Zellwigger as the female lead was the coup d'grace. It had a chance until she showed up.Mortensen and Irons did as best they could with a DOA script; the supporting cast were excellent. It's a shame for them it turned out so poorly. It lurched between major scenes without development; like the intervening scenes were afterthoughts. The brief courtroom scene; in which Harris had no lines, and RZ wasn't in at all, was the highlight of the movie. On the whole, I though it was sterile. Full of loose ends. Technically, it had an dull, artificial look. Watery soup with a few chunks of meat, that sums it up.
