This is just opening here and I went to a morning preview yesterday.
I think it is the most bitter, painful dissection of a relationship since Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf.
The scene of Winslett in the bathroom near the end produced a sort of collective holding of breath that was like all the air had been sucked out of the cinema.
Under no circumstances is this a "date" movie.
It's not perfect: I thought the opening a bit unconvincing and the way the children were so often conveniently farmed out a bit bizarre, but as it got underway the pressure seemed to increase as if a storm was approaching.
The performances by DeCaprio and especially Winslett are staggeringly good, in my opinion.
