I agree ...


I remember seeing The English Patient for the first time on the back of someone's seat on an aeroplane with uncomfortable stethoscope earphones and being totally engaged. The second time, in a theatre with Dolby whatever, the spectacle was certainly greater (as in Wow!) but the impact of the narrative was much the same.

I doubt whether Lawrence of Arabia - a lesser film, in my book - would work as well under arduous conditions! But David Lean's Dr Zhivago worked for me on a small TV set in a hotel room. Would 2001 A Space Odyssey?

I suppose it's a matter of whether a particular film's excellence resides primarily in its narrative or its visuals or even soundtrack?
