What I should have said in my initial post was that Tati could have been a silent film comedian on the order of Keaton, Lloyd, Chaplin, Fields, and a few others. These guys are the Olympians of classic film comedy and Tati belongs in their company...
Tati's films remind me more of the films of Keaton and Lloyd, silent and sound, than those of Chaplin. That's because of the tone of their characters rather than their comic abilities.
