'Away We Go'

And we wished we hadn't. GF's choice, but I was willing, using the 'you never know' rationalizing spur of the optimistic personality complex. Now I do know-cloying, cliched, hit-you-on-the-head-with-two-by-four symbolism, screenplay tied together with huge lapses of human logic, in sum, a movie that you stubbornly sit through to the end, possibly due to the 7.00 bucket of popcorn ('a large is only 25 cents more!). Other audience members apparently didn't spend as much at the snack counter. Note to self-next time, small popcorn.

Positives? Allison Janney was surprisingly funny, as long as you were willing to overlook the undertone of parental child abuse as a source of humor. Maggie Gyllenhaal did the best that could be done with a role that was beyond caricature. Jeff Daniel's few moments onscreen showed real comedic chops. And that was it. I kept thinking that the movie's premise was so good, and had so much potential for a clever person-unfortunately, Mendez wasn't the guy.

Ah well-the turds make the jewels shine ever so much brighter, he says optimistically.
