A short (80 minutes) retelling of the mmm... fairy story of the king who kills his wives told intercut with a completely different story of 2 sisters reading the story of Bluebeard to each other.
Director Catherine Breillat has come up with a strange twist of slightly flat acting and sets that actually works!
The colours are downbeat and there is a slightly too self conscious homage to Bunuel (I think) but when something works... it works!
Whilst the story is a delicate or difficult one these days, the film does not have any sex scenes between the grown Bluebeard and his obviously and actually very young wife. The actresses in the main roles could only have been 15, maybe 16 at the time it was made.
I only saw this film on a whim because I had time before The Missing Person and I'm glad I did.
An interesting film that shot past although I did have a horrible moment at one point I was watching an Incredible String Band video from 1968!
