Clooney and DiCaprio would BOTH be terrible choices.
I agree that Depp's great imagination as an actor could make for an intriguing performance ... and also that Connick, who has great empathy and experience with the performer's life, could also be a good choice.
Jaquin Phoenix did a bang up job on Johnny Cash (though somehow dodged and Oscar) ... perhaps a case study arguing in favor of Depp.
Interestingly, Connick, at one point in his career, was widely considered the heir apparent to the great Sinatra. I remember a televised special in which Sinatra deigned to sit in the audience, and, n effect, bless the coronation. Sinatra, on this occasion (and quite generously I thought) made it obvious that he admired Connick's ability as a vocalist. Whether or not Connick actually had the talent (and at times, he seemed to have), it was a promotion he ultimately rejected, deciding at that point to concentrate on his acting career.
Was he actually more interested in acting? Was he simply reluctant to cast himself in Sinatra's shadow? I wonder if he is even on the radar scope for the role.
