This is the second film I have seen recently where a man has to deal with taking over the care of his family when his wife dies although in this it is his daughter who "sees" the dead woman not him.
It is also a hundred times better than The Boys Are Back.
Director Michael Winterbottom has put together a film that has some of the brooding strangeness of Don't Look Now as the family wander their new home town in Italy.
The acting is first class and the characters come to life... the teenage daughter finding male attention both wanted and not wanted, the younger daughter is especially believable, and Colin Firth as the husband not sure whether he wants to start new relationships.
One scene towards the end when the younger daughter follows a vision of her mother across town is especially uncomfortable... as it should be.
A good small film and one that can happily be watched on a small screen as it is nearly all about the characters.
I was left wanting more.
Michael Winterbottom films are always interesting even in their worst moments (Beautiful Heart) and this is far from one of his worse moments.
