I watched way way back when Siskel and Ebert were on PBS. They syndicated and got very popular. A number of other movie review pairs came and went, but this one had something good. I liked Ebert more than Siskel and I didn't trust either one that much, but I enjoyed hearing their opinions and their give-and-take. And it became a nice way to find out what new movies were out each week.
So Siskel got sick, left the show, Ebert tried replacements, settled on Roeper. He was OK, pretty lightweight, but OK. In the course of time, Ebert got his own cancer, left the show and Roeper tried all sorts of replacements, ranging from very cool (Kevin Smith) to inexplicable (John Mellencamp). I don't remember who he settled on, it didn't last too long before the powers that be decided to chuck it all and get 2 young critics to appeal to the youth. Mankewicz was not bad, but Lyons was simply terrible.
So, out of the blue, in September, the 2 young hosts were scrapped and now the show has the 2 best critics in its entire history IMHO. A.O. Scott of the NY Times and Michael Phillips (Chicago Tribune?) They know their movies, they know how to write an entertaining review, their interchanges are witty and incisive, and this show has hit an unexpected peak, at a time when I actually thought it was about to disappear completely. They both liked New Moon. That doesn't mean I'm going to see it, but I won't sneer as much at those who do.
