Director Julian Schnabel was a famous NY artist - paintings, sculpture and collage - prior to turning to film. I think he has foun his metier in movies. DBATB is his best IMO - a very special experience. Schnabel also made Basquiat and Before Night Falls (with Javier Bardem).
