1947 drama about the long-running Irish insurrection stars one of my favorite actors in a terrific role, James Mason cannot overcome the plot. Too many distractions with over-developed characters that seem to be doing double-time as metaphors, i.e. the artist, the drunk, the priest, the businessman, and dilute the tension.
It's hard for the grandson of an Irishman to criticize such a film but.... it isn't that good. Mason, against all reason, at the end of his life mentioned it as his finest.
