about a young Russian sailor from the steppes who returns home, hoping to successfully court the lovely Tulpan, only to have his stories of daring do during his military service fall on deaf ears; her only comment after he narrated a terrific struggle with a gigantic octopus? "His ears are too large."
Meanwhile, life in the yurt where he lives, a guest of his sister and brother-in-law with their two kids, is taking a toll on the hospitality.
This is one of those quiet films which show us a life as alien as if it depicting that of life on another planet. The cinematography, as I said, has seldom been equaled (real storms and not FX!) and the acting is so natural as to make one wonder if the film has been misidentified as drama: if it had been called a documentary, it would be indistinguishable from one.
This film has generated quite a bit of praise but not enough: it is superb.
