In a sense, this is the French prison version of "An Education."
A dead end kid of 19 is sent to adult prison. He can't read or write. The French prison is divided by culture and religion, Corsican gangsters on one side and Moslem gangsters on the other. The kid is both Arab, of Moslem ancestry, and also Corsican, so he is an outcast in both worlds.
The Corsican godfather sees an immediate use for him and makes him an offer that, in godfather fashion, he really should not refuse. And his journey starts, as he makes his way and learns the lessons provided in this corrupt and violent environment.
There is plenty of explicit violence. France or US, this is a very familiar movie world, filled with hard men who will kill each other for a Euro. The hero, or "prophet," is of course an anti-hero, heading for criminal glory rather than straight world glory.
It's stylish, with random visual flourishes, it keeps moving all the way through, although at 2 1/2 hours, it does seem like we've served his full term with him. It's hard to care really about anyone here, but if you're looking for a good tough prison movie, this will fit the bill.
