RE:I'm embarrassed too...

...to admit I paid to see this film...in 3D no less (actually much less). My reference is the version from 1981 or so.

This time around I found the acting stiff and uninvolved and the special effects only a marginal improvement over the stop motion animation of 81 though Hades' entrances and exits were decent. But the biggest letdown was the 3D. Just terrible with no sense of any dimensionality most of the time. There were scenes where it was as if foreground images were placed into the background and vise versa but size cues were opposite. Perceptually very confusing at these times. And then there was the "coin" shot that was definitely 2D or fewer.

I've read industry commentary regarding this film and its initial success where it's stated that while the 2d>3D conversion is acknowledged as flawed, audience acceptance vindicates the process. IOW, the industry considers their customers as not very discriminating from a technical viewpoint. I guess the upshot is that we can expect a lot more of this crap until either the 3D fad runs its course or 3D aficionados start voting with their viewing decisions.

Overall, I don't recommend this film but if one is compelled to see it, skip the 3D and see it in 2D as it was intended to be seen.
