As expected from Judd Apatow, this is profane and raunchy. No surprise to those who have seen his prior movies. This one is also funny all the way through, often hilarious, and tempered with just the slightest hint of sorrow. Jonah Hill is fine as the record company guy, but Russell Brand as shambling out-of-control rock star is the movie. He is ridiculously impulsive, partially maybe because of constant drugs and alcohol. His lines are smart and funny and he owns every scene he is in (which is most of the movie). There are also some strange cameos (Paul Krugman for one, yes the Nobel Prize economist Paul Krugman) and Puff Daddy does a credible job as an amped-up record company exec. And although this is mostly just zaniness in the service of laughs, there a bit of real human interaction as well. If you just can't see dragging yourself to Prince of Persia or Robin Hood (I couldn't force myself to those), this is a nice summer movie alternative.
Hint: for a final laugh, stay until the very end of the credits, just before the screen goes black.
