I have one LG DVD drive that seems to be particularly talented at reading bad DVDs (and CDs). It's not infallible, but I've compared it to at least a half dozen other readers and writers, and on several marginal discs it was the only one to get a clean read. With sketchy CDs, I didn't get any better results using a Plextor CDRW, so I suspect this drive may just be a happy accident.
I suggest testing all the DVD reader/writers you can put your hands on, and see if any are particularly gifted. Then use that drive to rip rental movies, and watch the rips.
Or you could hunt down one of the old DVD players that used an internal IDE DVD drive, and upgrade that with a "talented" drive if you can find one. Some Apex players used IDE loaders, as did the "Electrohome" EH-8181. And probably others.
