This stark, compelling story takes place in Skarrild which is located in the flatland of Denmark. The land is only good for grazing cattle that occasionally sink into the bogs after rains.
Enter our anti-hero, Robert, who has been relieved of duty in Copenhagen to let his nerves recoup after some nasty domestic business that led to divorce. He is sent to what appears to be a very quiet and lifeless town--just the kind we know has tons of secrets.
His first day Robert seeks out the owner of the local bike shop only to find he disappeared weeks ago without report. He also meets the local femme fatale who begins to toy with his affections while alternately being beaten by her husband and herself. Soon after his first meeting with Ingerlise he unexpectedly meets Jorgen the town bully and husband to Ingerlise. Jorgen has the run of this small burg and people stay out of his way. Even the local bar has assigned seating and its patrons reflect the mores of the town: we have our ways to handle things.
The story is classic Scandinavian with its stark atmosphere and rich character building. It builds with a few Cohen-like twists and touches and is ultimately compelling to the end--which happens just like the town folks wanted it.
This is a clever yet believable story built around some true events in the life of the author of the novel.
