This 1983 film of pursuit is termed a "Claude Miller thriller". Quite an exaggeration but still an interesting, humorous film of an aging detective on the trail of a beautiful young woman who leaves a wide swath of dead, wealthy men across Europe.
Michel Serrault plays a detective assigned to find out the details of a young heirs mysterious new girl friend. As he begins his assignment we find that he has not seen his daughter Marie since his wife left him when she was but a wee child. The new girlfriend of the heir soon dispatches him and leaves with a load of cash to finance her travels. Instead of reporting the crime Serrault lies to his boss in order to pursue a young and beautiful Isabelle Adjani across Europe thinking she is his long lost daughter.
There are ironies and dark humor to help this film pad along to a typically quizzical French ending typical of the era.
IF you have a real appreciation of French film give it a shot.
