The dialogue in Winter's Bone is largely taken directly from the Daniel Woodrell's wonderful novel. What little is changed or added fits right in.
But the writing was outstanding, and it's a brilliant adaptation of a fine book. Granik hit a home run IMO.
I agree the performances are naturalistic and superbly acted/directed - and not just the standout performance of Jennifer Lawrence but also the supporting players who hold it all together - such as John Hawkes as Teardrop and Dale Dickey as Merab.
Sorry this response is so late, but I just last week finished re-reading Woodrell's source novel. I highly recommend this book and his others, especially Tomato Red, Give Us A Kiss, Death of Sweet Mister and Woe To Live On - which was adapted by Ang Lee into Ride With The Devil several years ago.
