I've got to admit it's a fine addition to the Western canon.
Amazingly, Bobby Duval gave a fine performance free from the obnoxious, stock mannerisms he later adopted. Tommy Lee was fine, not allowing himself to lapse into the Texan caricature he often has since then. Sensational performances.
Unlike many Westerns, Dove doesn't follow the "more gore the merrier" adage. People die, for a reason and brutality isn't sugar-coated. Also, again against cliché, the women aren't one-dimensional; they're complex creatures driven by circumstance and tragedy (still, the whore does have a heart of gold and Huston's character appears to have NO faults.....).
The music wasn't overly intrusive, but the cinematography and their subject, the great American mountains and plains, were marvelously presented.
