Wahlberg is a limited actor but he surrounded himself with good talent and a good script. Christian Bale pulled off a great performance that added entertainment value. It had an authentic East Coast blue collar feel and everyone nailed the Massachusetts accents. The film was weighted toward character development and rather light on boxing scenes.
I have a fetish for boxing films (except the Rocky movies that suck of course) and the fight scenes in this are much different from Raging Bull, where Scorsese turned the canvas into an otherwordly atmosphere and Cinderella Man which had a more realistic feel to the fighting by putting you into the ring and more accurately approximating the fighters' styles.
The climax of this film was very much telegraphed but executed with great skill from a production standpoint so that the emotion of it was actually powerful. I recommend it.
