"Welcome" is a tearjerker, make no mistake about it, but it is a very good tearjerker. It is also very un-American one, and it shows in almost every step along the way. Just when you expect the usual Hollywood cliche, it surprises you with gentle and to the point treatment. Needless to say the ending is also not what you would expect from the local production.Simply superb performance by Vincent Lindon.
"The Young Lieutenant" is a a police drama that tries to avoid your usual drama element as much as it can, which is hard given the subject matter, but the valiant attempt is still worthy of a praise. Also totally un-American in its quiet and soft-focus treatment of events. Those of us who love Nathalie Baye will have yet another reason to love the film, as she is exceptional and totally dominates the scene... which is not too easy, given that her male partners are doing very competent jobs, especially the always enigmatic and self-confident Roschdy Zem.
Both films are very strongly recommended.
