editing, and acting: the mother and the traitor are as powerful in their silent acting as any talking actors. Yes, the film is obvious propaganda, but the situation of workers in those days was very, very dire-- similar to that in the US. Unfortunately, the result in the USSR was communism that wreaked as much devastation, or more so, than the horrible condition it replaced. Politics aside, this is powerful, compelling cinema and NOT to be missed by any film lover. His later film, "The Deserter," that accompanies this on the Netflix dvd, is far less powerful: preachy, overwrought, and repetitive--- all the qualities avoided by the earlier classic.
