I also admit to having an inordinate fondness for the original Apes franchise. So, I was biased toeward liking it in advance. In my defense, however, I hated the Marky Mark Tim Burton vandalization of the original, so I can be critical.
;)
The movie did the one thing I like most about a series reboot:
It took it slowly and built a rock solid back story before all the Hollywood action started.
Then, it subtly wove in the fabric of the original Apes flick so that the original movie could have taken place in the world built by this film. It had good over-all fidelity.
Good continutity thorughout, actually, with one minor quibble that could be easily satisfied. (I don't want to toss in a spoiler, however, so I'll leave it at that.) Nothing glaring enough to offend a fan.
The story line was true to the main characters and was careful to respect the franchise.
No huge MacGuffins, the CGI was not overwrought.
Draco Malfoy is in danger of being type-cast, however!
The movie handled the main plot perfectly and added in the prequel subplot quite adroitly, as well.
I have a small additional quibble with some of the biology that got glossed over, but what the hell.
Absolutely no complaint from this admitted fanboy.
So, HBO or Showtime, make a series for me!
