Some of you probably remember the 2003 film Swimming Pool, with Charlotte Rampling. Not a bad film at all.Reading the plot summary of the 1969 The Swimming Pool with Alain Delon and Romy Schneider, one can't but wonder if one is the remake of the other.
I have to admit, I still don't know. What makes a remake a remake? How closely does it have to be to the original to qualify for that title? While there are definite parallels between the two films, they are also quite different.
The "The" film is your average Soviet journalist's dream - talk about the decadence of the West, of moral decay of the bourgeoisie - this is the stuff Pravda pages are made of! There is not a shred of integrity in any of the characters, they are nothing but useless scum on the Earth's surface.
And just as pointless and... as probable... is the ending. In some sense it is the long film's strongest point.
A bit of trivia - the young brat is played by none other than Jane Birkin, who went on to become the mother of Charlotte Gainsbourg, and gave her name to the famous Hermes bag... looking at her one would think all that is hardly justified... but we are not French, their minds work in mysterious ways, ugliness is beauty to them, sour wine preferable to Coca-Cola, so let them have their 15 minutes of fun.
Ah... yes... and the Swimming Pool, you might ask? I think all this justifies the second look. After all - Ludivine Sagnier is whole lot sexier that Ms. Birkin.
