Personally, I enjoyed two other versions better than the one Mr.Lancaster played in.
One, 1964 version starring, Lee Marvin, Angie Dickinson, and Ronald Reagan, yes, that Ronald Reagan.

Both plot and acting wise, I like 60s version better.....and the other one by Andrei Tarkovsky, yes, that Tarkovsky.

Cinematography-wise, Tarkovsky's is the best, very creative and effective use of Dutch angle, and 'staging' the scene while both introducing new characters, and setting off confrontation, both effective dramatically and efficient technically.Btw. The one Hemingway wrote only consists of the initial scene of the one Mr.Lancaster played in. The rest 'talky' part is typical Hollywood 1940's wannabee 'noir' hackjob.
