The reason you love "Barry Lyndon," actually pretty mediocre in the Kubrick oeuvre, is that YOU take certain preconceived notions to it, just as you accuse semuta. Films as different as 2001, Clockwork, and FMJ purposefully show how modern "systems" have the power to dwarf humans and humanity. Of course, Kubrick also could "do" emotion and make actor-centered films while showing that. Paths of Glory, Lolita, and The Killing show that.
