Hungarian border a dangerous place to try to survive as Bolshies, buoyed by Hungarian volunteers, and White Army factions clash in a no-prisoners-taken conflagration. In this non-stop horror-fest, executions and cold-blooded killings give the viewer no rest, no respite from the carnage. There are moments that would appear ironically humorous, if not for the tragic circumstances. Back and forth over a small plot of land, each side in turn takes control, executing the inevitable cadre of prisoners as blithely as if ordering dinner. The beautiful cinematography of the natural surroundings provides needed relief, yet it too becomes complicit as its stark contrast with the brutality becomes apparent. Miklos Jancso has created as powerful a war film as ever has been filmed.
