"The Russian Empire:" how many historical documentaries truly are as entertaining as a

good history book? Most of the films are paced for a grade-school intellect, moving at a snail's pace. In this one, by Russian director Leonid Parfyonov, you'd better pay strict attention: the facts come fast and furious. Further, the budget allowed for visits, very well filmed, to all the pertinent sites. It is one thing to read of Peter's fascination with trades and crafts and quite another to see his actual tools and visit the humble quarters and sites in Amsterdam where he actually lived and worked. I can't imagine a better history in film form. The narrator is a sharp-eyed, glib fellow that makes for an entertaining and opinionated host.
Very, very highly recommended for anyone interested in history or Russia. If both interest you, you'll be transported.
