RE: One of the best Sherlock ever---

I must admit that Watson being portrayed as the doddering older fool is kind of ridiculous. But remember the era of the films. First of all, film making was still a relatively young art. Also, many of the movies studios of the time thought of the audience as unsophisticated. The subtle character development of both Holmes and Watson in the original novels and stories is easier to do in written form. So in film, especially then, they exaggerated the contrasts between the two to highlight Sherlock Holmes' brilliant deductive skills since there is no time to fill in the back story. Also, acting in that era was much more theatrical than the more realistic acting and portrayals of today.

I'm not saying I agree with the approach, but if you understand some of the reasoning then it becomes a bit more palatable. Sort of.
