It is the apparently simple story of an overweight barely literate black 16 year old girl from Harlem pregnant for the second time as a result of being raped by her father.
That is not the worst part of her life.
The depth and strength of the characters is breathtakingly believable and whether your politics are left right or other, you will have to confront your own stereotypes and prejudices whilst watching it.
Kravitz has only a small role and Carey is almost unrecognisable.
I almost didn't go because I imagined a star vehicle of some kind, but it is a long way from that.
A very long way.
