It was still "greasy" through the 90's, but today the city in trying to clean up its image, (right!), and has moved to become more "family" oriented.
I love when films accurately capture some memory of the American experience, as was achieved in "The Killing of a Chinese Bookie" - director's cut.
I feel that the Director's Cut added cabaret scenes so full of desperate pathos as to elevate a great film, to art.
